Erie Mine - Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark by NPS Park Cultural Landscapes Program
Erie Mining Camp Bunkhouse, 1993
The Erie Mine was one of several areas developed near the Kennicott Glacier following the discovery of copper ore on Bonanza Ridge. Industrial and domestic activity expanded in the region between the years 1900 and 1938. Positioned on the side of the ridge, the bunkhouse conveys how the rugged nature of the landscape limited the spatial layout of the mining infrastructure. Aerial tramways would become an important aspect of the mining landscape, facilitating the transport of supplies.
The Erie Mine was closed temporarily in 1918 due to World War I labor shortages, and it was permanently closed in the early 1930s with the depletion of copper ore.
