Kennecott Mill Town - Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark by NPS Park Cultural Landscapes Program
Hospital, Residential Area, and Assay Shed, 1976
These structures were part of the Kennecott Mill Town, one of several areas developed near the Kennicott Glacier following the discovery of copper ore on Bonanza Ridge. Mining operations expanded and declined between the years 1900 and 1938, at which point the mines were closed due to copper depletion. A variety of structures were constructed to support industrial and domestic activities, and many of these structures still remain and help provide an image of life in a remote, early 20th century mining town. The bunkhouses and assay office were built in 1910, and the hospital followed around 1916.
In 1980 and 1983, the bursting of the National Creek dam reshaped the central part of the mill town and deposited large volumes of silt through these three structures.
